Where to start

Start with the contribution year and your own eligible payments. Employer contributions are a separate stream and do not count towards the $1,042.86 amount used for the full government contribution.

Key points

The year runs from 1 July to 30 June

Your eligible contributions are counted within that annual period, not by calendar year.

The match is 25 cents per dollar

The current maximum is $260.72, and IRD states that at least $1,042.86 of your own eligible contributions is needed to receive it in full.

Your own contributions are the relevant stream

Salary deductions and eligible payments you make to IRD or your provider can count. Employer contributions, earlier government contributions and Australian transfers do not count towards the required amount.

Eligibility can cover only part of a year

Age, taxable income, where you live and the number of eligible days in the year can limit the amount available.

How the annual calculation works

The government-contribution year runs from 1 July to 30 June. For an eligible member, the current contribution is 25 cents for every $1 of eligible money the member puts in during that period, capped at $260.72.

IRD states that contributing at least $1,042.86 of your own money during the year is enough for the full current maximum, subject to the eligibility conditions.

Which payments count towards the maximum

Eligible contributions made by the member can include deductions from salary or wages and direct payments to Inland Revenue or the KiwiSaver provider. Employer contributions do not count towards the $1,042.86. Past government contributions and money transferred from an Australian retirement scheme do not count either.

This separation matters because an account balance can include all of those streams even though only the member's eligible contributions are used for this annual match.

The main eligibility conditions

IRD currently describes the contribution as available to a contributing member aged 16 to 65 with annual taxable income of $180,000 or less. The member must also mainly live in New Zealand, unless one of the listed overseas government-service or approved charitable-work exceptions applies.

A provider applies after 30 June. Meeting the basic description does not establish a particular person's entitlement; the provider and IRD contribution record still control the claim.

A partial year can reduce the maximum

If someone joins KiwiSaver, turns 16, turns 65 or stops meeting the eligibility conditions part-way through the year, IRD bases the government contribution on the number of days they were both a member and eligible. Contributing $1,042.86 does not override that partial-year limit.

A simple calculation example

This example shows the matching calculation only. It is not a recommendation to contribute a particular amount and does not decide anyone's eligibility.

  • Your entitlement depends on your circumstances and the current IRD rules.
