Changing your KiwiSaver provider or fund
Changing a provider and changing an investment fund are different decisions. This guide explains the distinction, the information worth comparing and how to find the relevant process.
Where to start
Separate the scheme provider from the investment option. Fees, risk, investment approach, service and process matter more than a short-term return table.
Key points
Provider and fund differ
The provider runs the scheme or service; the fund is the investment option. Changing one is not always the same as changing the other.
One provider at a time
A KiwiSaver member generally has one provider, so switching should be treated as a managed process rather than opening multiple competing accounts.
Avoid pressure
A switch decision should not be rushed because of marketing, recent returns or a single conversation.
Check more than returns
Fees, risk, investment approach, service, tools and time horizon can matter as much as performance tables.
Separate provider from fund choice
A provider change and an investment-fund change are related, but they are not the same decision. The provider runs the scheme or service; the fund is the investment option inside it.
Use more than last year's return
Fees, service, investment approach, risk level and time horizon can all matter. A strong recent return does not automatically make a fund suitable for your next decision.
Know the process before moving
A provider switch starts with the new provider. Inland Revenue says the new provider arranges the transfer, notifies you when it is complete and that the process takes about 2 weeks. A fund change within the same scheme follows that provider's process. If a withdrawal or another time-sensitive transaction is already underway, confirm the sequence with the provider before submitting the change.
Avoid pressure
A switch should not be rushed because of marketing, a single conversation or one performance table. Take time to understand what would actually change.
What to check next
- Compare the current and proposed provider, fund, fees, risk and process before switching.
- Whether to switch or stay depends on personal circumstances.
- Check current IRD/FMA guidance and provider process.
