Immigration answer
Can I stay and work in New Zealand after I finish studying?
After study, the main work route to check is usually the Post Study Work Visa or another work visa option. INZ says Post Study Work Visa settings depend on the qualification and study details, and that a person can only have this visa once.
Answer
This guide explains how qualification level, degree or non-degree status, study location, study length, finish date and upcoming INZ changes can affect post-study work settings.
Qualification and study pattern come first
INZ lists qualification rules for the Post Study Work Visa. Degree qualifications, higher-level qualifications and some non-degree qualifications can be treated differently, and some lower-level qualifications need to be on INZ's eligible qualifications list.
The visa is usually once only
INZ states that a person can only have a Post Study Work Visa once. That makes timing important, especially if the person is comparing study, post-study work and longer-term work or residence options.
Late-2026 changes need a fresh check
INZ has announced changes from 16 November 2026, including expanded graduate-diploma eligibility and a new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa. Anyone relying on those changes should check the official page again close to the application date.
Post-study work is not the same as residence
A post-study work route can help with work after study, but it is not the same as deciding a residence pathway. Work, employer, qualification and residence questions should be checked separately.
What to check next
- Check the current Post Study Work Visa page and the eligible qualifications list before relying on a course summary.
- Be careful with advice based on future changes until the relevant start date has arrived.
- Keep post-study work, employer-sponsored work and residence pathway questions separate.
